hmm the way sororities work is not exactly islamic in anyway what they are mentioning is a student organization now throwing some greek letters on a house and calling it gamma gamma chi is not exactly a sorority, maybe a leadership organization ? greeks are all about legacy this doesn't have any greeks is all about community interaction, being islamic isolates them thats my opinion but they can knock themselves out really trying to establish it :)
I've never been part of a sorority so I can't speak with any authority about them. What "legacy" are they about? And why can't these Muslim women interact with the community at large as Muslim American women.
I think I kind of get what no_angel is saying about the legacy issue. If these women have daughters, they would have to become a gamma chi, to continue the line. I guess that's how sororities work. So that's a good question "what legacy are they about?" But I don't see how interacting with the community as Muslim women would isolate them.
haha ok sakura interesting blogs... especially the yaoi (bi-shonen wa sukijanaika :P ) and thanks for explaining that part regarding legacy and pledges and initiation. as for the isolation part its just an observation am building off a couple of things first the fact that christian sororities tend to revolve around the church and the ministry and general evangelist activities and are not considered part of the greek system by other greeks. same way with the jewish ones. now to further complicate the issue is that usually things come in pairs, each fraternity has an affinity to a sorority, that would be complicated even more so because they are muslim. without that they will find it hard to participate in greek functions, and legacy system is in order to instill pride in the members to allow the values and ritual to propagate do u think they are committed to that ?
I actually think its a great idea, the legacy is in the making and the clip showed the interaction they are having with the community. As for linkages with fraternities, who says a muslim fraternity is not in the making (not to mention other fraternities they could work with). It helps the women in the sororities work together, survive and support each other while doing good in the society around them, how can that not be good?

but surly all "traditions" had to start somewhere. Why can't these women be the pioneers, the foremothers, of this tradition in its Islamic form?
Oh they can. It's the first Muslim sorority, the legacy has already started. :D
I just wonder what kind of rituals, secrets, etc. they'll have, if they have any.
