An Argument to End All Debate

"A court in Azerbaijan has jailed two journalists for writing and printing a newspaper article that was critical of the Islamic religion and the Prophet Muhammad. Samir Sadagatoglu, chief editor of the Senet weekly newspaper, was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday, while Rafik Tagi, a journalist at the paper, was given three years. The court ruled that their article 'Europe and us' was insulting to Islam and Muslims for saying that European societies were more successful than Muslim ones because Christian teachings were based on peace and tolerance while Islamic values, based on the teachings and actions of Muhammad, were not."

Both journalists are Muslim.

So to prove the journalists wrong in their views of Islam as intolerant and violent, so-called defenders of Islam can't find any better defense than to force the journalists' mouth shut through jail. The other option is killing them, which some people in the court apparently attempted to do. They were trying to execute a fatwa issued by an Iranian clerk that killing the reporters is a duty for every Muslim.

Yep. That makes sense. Now, can you please beam me out of here?

hi amal,
it is a revolting story and i like how u pointed out the absurdity of taking action against them bcs they said that islam was intolerant.

but i noticed that u mentionned that both were muslim. what does this change? is criticism to any religion allowed strictly to its adherents? on the other hand, they can still be born muslim, yet show intolerance and racism toward all muslims (fox new specializes in finding those).

Hi Haytham,

The answer to your question is no: the fact they were both Muslim doesn't change anything. My mentioning of the journalists' religion was intended to imply anything. But I can see how it may have seemed so, especially the way I placed it in the post.

so thanks for drawing my attention to that and giving me a chance to clarify.

correction:

"My mentioning of the journalists' religion was NOT intended to imply anything."

What sort of God (and religion) isn't big enough to look after itself when insulted and needs the protection of these idiots? It's nothing to do with real faith and everything to do with control, isn't it. Horrendous.
