Arabic School in New York

Remember that Arabic public school planned to open in Brooklyne, New York that I reported on a while back? As expected, it's becoming controversial. Some columnists, like Daniel Pipes, have attacked it on ideological grounds as having a secret "Islamist agenda." For some people, it seems that teaching the Arabic language in any sympathetic way "naturally" produces jihadist tendencies. Maybe they should work on banning the Arabic language itself.

The article talks about some partents' objections to the school on non-ideological grounds. These objections I'm in total sympathy with.

Salam. Which is Arabic for Peace.

At the school down the block from me here (same neighborhood as the proposed Arabic school) It says "one family" in 15 languages, including Arabic and Hebrew. This is a very progressive neighborhood. The opposition to the school is largely from outside the neighborhood.
