Don Imus's sexist and racist remarks against the Rutgers women basketball team
got him fired! I guess he picked on the wrong team! He should have done what many other commentators, such as Glen Beck, are doing: direct his hate speech at safe targets like Arabs and Muslims. Not only won't he get fired, he will get promoted.

imus will not be miss.
i never liked that guy.
peace, love and mlokheah :-)
especially mlokheah, Abu Shakoush.
This whole issue with Imus has made me realize how rampant racism and sexism is in the media. I'm kind of annoyed by the whole situation. I don't understand why this is getting so much press.
As an African American I'm more angry at the reactions, especially from those so-called black leaders like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are so ready to scream racism, but don't speak out about the blatant sexism that's rampant in hip-hop and rap music, and BET.
I also don't understand how society ignore the rampant racism and sexism that's in the media. And suddenly get all upset when some shock jock white guy makes a stupid comment.
Like the racism against people of Middle Eastern descent. Or any other group for that matter.
Well I'm sorry for the rant, this issue has made me very angry.
if you just watch the O'Reilly show, you will see the double standard: he once said, and I will never forget this, that so and so said things against blacks that would not "even be accepted" if they were said against Arabs!!!
It seems that America has at least certain mechanisms in place to fight racism, certainly against jews, less so against Blacks, but no mechanisms at all to fight racism against other ethnicities, specifically Arabs. Racism is licensed there...
Plus, to be fired is not enough to me, he should go to prison, to do charity work, etc. This might change things, but firing a secure guy anyway is nothing--bascially nothing!

Sakura kiss,
people have blind spots. It's interesting why Imus's stupid comment was not tolerated this time. Why didn't he get away with it is the interesting question. Yes, sexism and racism are rampant, and many people see one and not the other. Right wing radio talk show hosts in particular have played an significant role in promoting everyday fascism in this country.
ng,
I show clips from O'reilly's show in one of my classes. They are part of the film TV's Promised Land. In one such clip he actually says that Afghani life is worth less than American lives because they die younger anyway. So it's fine to starve them to death. But why blame him. Didn't former Harvard professor make a similar argument.
The fact that saying certain things against Jews or African Americans or women are not acceptable now is a hard won achievement that should only help Arabs and Muslims even if only for the purpose of us illustrating that what is said about us is racist and you only need to replace Arab with "Jew," "black" or Italian to see the racism.
This doesn't surprise me. Amal, did you hear about this guy John Lewis coming to the GMU campus on April 24th? He is basically giving a speech, arguing that the U.S. should go into predominantly Muslim countries and literally bomb out and level them, no joke. And no one seems to be saying anything about it. Here is a link to his essay (barf!):
