Offensive Language?

Here's a passage from the book Speak Bird, Speak Again. It's from the story "Nus Nsais"; it may have been one of the offending passages since it mentions a man sucking on the breasts of the ghoul's sister and asking for help so his wives can get pregnant.

I like the affectlessness and the briskness of this "mezzan" (or sipping/sucking) description and I think this kind of style relieves the passage from whatever it is that is presumably explicit and offensive. Wow, this is great stuff, and I hope I come across this book and read it in Arabic. I am sure a translation of this crispy Palestinian tongue would kill everything.

First, all loonies are as bad as each other, take a look here One Nation Under Gosh

I remember nos nses. I remember hearing it while two or three aunts were feeding their babies. They did it openly in front of men from the family.

The usual way is for a fundamentalist regime to ban a book and then arrest/torture/ execute any dissenters; that teaches the population not to object to big changes. Fortunately, Hamas can't break heads at will.

But things may change and if they do no demonstration by Ramallah accademics will be able to stop them.

The reversal of this decision has nothing to do with the character of the Palestinians, any sound society would have been horrified by such an action. The reversal has to do with the fact that Hamas is weak.

This is weird, I remember hearing this story from my grandmother!
Why is this offensive, again?

ng,

they translated it to English but it loses so much. You read then just for the content and lose out on the sound and spirit of it.

Rabee,

Scary people in that video. Poor kids.

Yes, I think Hamas backing off has to do with its weakness right now, not because it really saw how wrong the decision is. They get away with things more easily when they target the weak such as homosexuals, women, and anything that more people would agree with them that is "immoral." With the book, they were over reaching.

qwaider,

I'm guessing this is the kind of passage that maybe offensive to some people...

jundi,

Yes, I'd appreciate you sending these passages; I like to see them. I don't have the Arabic version of the book.

Still the words are not offensive because of the context in which they appear. If a teacher uses these words in senetences to illustrate some grammar rules, you can say he or she are out of line and offensive. But they do appear in a folktales. The very definition of foktales is that they are the language of the people.

As to the first word in particular, which means penis, I remember my mother singing songs to my brother's two sons praising their penises. There is a whole genre in Palestine of these kinds of songs. I even wrote them down at some point.

No equivalent songs for vaginas. But that is another subject for another post.

hi, ok here is the exact text of the email i got .. i didn't alter a single word (even the censoring wasn't done by me) .. this is an exact copy paste of the email .. i'm afraid i can't vouch for it's accuracy so if part of it turns out to be fabricated don't shoot the messenger lol .. but i think it is true.

Hi Jundi,

Thank you for the passages. They sound righ; I don't think they are fabricated.

But they are taken out of context, which is the whole point. They got to be read in context of the folktale.

It was interesting to me to see that what is labeled as offensive in the above is not only the references to sexual parts, but mild swearing. "shu deenha hay?" is offensive? Why? Because of the word "deenha"? Kids hear and use this kind of language everyday. "yel3an abouk" (curse your father) is one of the most popular ways of cursing someone or of telling them how much you like them as when a mother would say to her kid or a father to his son: "yel3an abouk ma a7lak." Hamas has a long way to go if they want to clean up the language of the "street" and replace it with the language of the mosque. They need to wait till every Palestinian living now, man, woman, child, die.
