Fatwa: Chastity Belt to Protect Women From Rape

It's beginning to sound like a vagina monologue day on this blog today. Don't blame me; I'm just reporting the news.

I hate to say "I told you so." But I will say I knew this was coming! According to Al Arabeya, a prominent Malaysian Sheikh (Abu el Hasan al Hafez: remember his name) is encouraging women to wear chastity belts to ensure a better protection from rape.

During a religious lecture, he supposedly said that women will feel "safer" if they protected their vaginas. He insisted that his aim is not to demean women, but to protect them. He reminded his listeners that Malaysian women wore chastity belts up until the mid 1960s. In other words, he's not inventing the idea, but encouraging a return to a useful tradition.

I'm sorry, but this is the "logical" extension of the argument "Punish Women to Protect Them from Men" either by segregating them and restricting their movement, covering them, or locking them in a chastity belt!!

Why take any chances, this woman says: all methods should be used simultaneously. Here's what a protected Muslim woman's day would look like: she gets up in the morning, puts on her chastity belt (in case she forgot to put it back on during the night), gives the key to her husband or brother or son, who hopefully won't lose it, cover up herself from head to toe, preferably stay at home all day, and if she really must go out, she has to take someone with her for protection. If no one is available, and she ventures out into the dangerous world, she only has herself to blame if she gets raped.

Now, can someone please tell me what such fatwas say about Muslim men? Why aren't Muslim men offended by the implications of such sexist characterizations?

I taught a short story a couple of weeks ago called "Sultana's Dream" (1905) by a Muslim Indian writer named Rokeya Hussain. In it, Sultana, a Bengali woman living in Purdah, falls asleep one day only to find herself in a Utopian society called Ladyland. In this place, gender roles are reversed. Women roam the streets freely, while men are kept in segregation at home. The justification is that since men are "dangerous" to women because of their nature, then they should be locked away, not women. No sense punishing the victim. The society is free of crime and exploitation, is scientifically advanced thanks to women's universities that taught women to master science and use natural resources in an environmentally friendly way. It is ruled by a wise Queen who won the last war (which the men lost) through her and the women's cleverness. Religion in Ladyland is based on love.

Maybe I should fax a copy to Sheikhna. I am going to fax him a copy.

I see one good use for this contraption ....
It forces the woman to stay in shape while the man is away!! Genius!

Qwaider,

about a similar contraption for men: I believe there was something like that to discourage masterbation in Europe. There are plenty of websites selling chastity belts for men.

About the good use for the conraption:

You're pushing your luck : )

Lena,

It is commonly believed that chastity belts emerged in Europe in mideval times. A couple of historians came up with the idea that this is an urban legend. No matter what the history of the chastity belt is, it sucks.

Interesting. Kind of like those advisories here in America that tell women not to wear suspenders and also not to go out alone at night. Oh, and even those self defense classes imply that it is women's responsibility, and thus fault, to stop rape. Once people realize that violence against women is more of a men's issue than a women's then we will not have this stupid BS. Bah!

I never heard about the suspenders part. why exactly?

good to "see" you again, Lara.

Anyone who says a device like that will protect a woman from rape either doesn't know much about rape and how far some men will go to inflict violence on women or else is being disingenuous.

That thing could prevent a woman from enjoying consensual vaginal intercourse, but would barely even slow down a rapist intent on hurting her.

That does seem kind of kinky.

Anyways, I guess there is still the misconception that rape is about sex and it's not. Another thing is that rape is one-sided, women are the ones who to avoid being raped.

Sandra,

some people define woman as a vagina and therefore will consider this an effective way to protect "woman" thus defined. But your point will make them worry. Damn, what will they come up with next?

sakura kiss,

kinky? but that's not the point of the contraption. It's meant to discourage sex not encourage it. you people are hopeless :)

Love your blog.

So, practical question, how do those husbands expect women to be able to relieve themselves?

At 9:59 AM, February 17, 2007, Blogger Amal A said...

kinzi,

there are openings for that purpose. Internet websites marketing the chastity belt to Americans say so. Personally I've never seen one up close and personal.

Sakura Kiss,
u r not the only one to have that thought. The chastity belt is used a sex toy by some. Mostly men on men.

Hi Amal, the "suspenders part" because it makes it easier for a random rapist in a scary alleyway to run over and undress you by cutting the straps of your suspenders with scissors or a knife. Absurd huh? If only people realized that a huge majority of rape victims or survivors are attacked by acquaintances, boyfriends, dates, husbands, male family members....

The unfaithful party should have to wear the thing! Of course if its the man how do you get him into it. One woman's answer - as he sleeps, have a chain already attached to something sturdy like a radiator pipe, long enough to reach him - as he sleeps, attach to his neck. He awakes, refuse to let him out till he dons the chasity bellt. Thereafter, refuse to let him out of the CB till he is neck-locked as before.

We were a long time friend of Mr Bill Jones. Bill passed away last year, but was for a long time the ONLY U.S based manufacture of Stainless Steel Chastity Belts here in the US.

Bill made belts for many women and even for a sultans harem a few years back. Bill made an adjustable chastity belt, allowing for weight gain and loss for a woman I knew.

I recall him making a belt for a young girl of 15 who had a child out of wedlock. She was being raised by her grandparents. The story goes that her parents threw her out and her grandfather insisted that as part of her living with them, she had to wear a chastity belt every time she left their house. This arrangement allowed them to care for the young girl and child, while assuring that she would have no more children until she was older.

Chastity belts can be an effective tool for more than just sexual denial, or control!

Kudos to the comment above about the young girls belt! Our Society should learn from it!

I would just like to say that, after being a child of mainstream media for most of my life, i have finally done some research and found a lot of things that are fed to us not to be true. i want to thank you for helping me see past all the lies and misconceptions about arabic/muslim women (and men). you are an inspiration to your comrades, and an inspiration to me, a white girl from the north. Again, thank you.

I am a man living in Europe. Women (and sometimes men too) get raped here also. i really dont mean to insult anybody but in this place, the woman is helped, given medical treatment and counseling while the man if convicted (which is usually the case) is locked up.
in my view there is no prison sentence too short for rapists.

granted your culture is different but there are some things that are just wrong no matter what part of the world you live in.

I was married for 7 years to a Muslim man. After all those year he cheated on my not only with women but also men. Why aren't they suggesting chastity belt for men as well.

At 5:45 AM, November 28, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your right. It should be illegal for men not to wear chastitybelts. Have an institution lock em up and watched release once a month. Then put it straight back on again. This will solve the problem for good. I for one as a male would love it.
