A Jordanian man fired four bullets into his 17 year-old-daughter's head to cleanse his "honor." The daughter soiled his honor by disappearing from the house for two weeks then coming back. Autopsy showed that she was a virgin.
The man will probably get six months in jail--a reduced sentence for murderers who label their crimes "honor killings." He will emerge from jail a proud man. None of his neighbors will stop talking to him. Other men will look up to him.
There have been people trying to pressure the parliament into changing the penal law so as to give the murderer a real sentence instead of a pat on the shoulder. But so far they have failed.
Don't you love it when suddenly Jordan becomes a democratic country that cannot change a law unless the parliament approves!
According to Al Arabiya report, there have been 12 such "honor killings" in Jordan last year (in Arabic). Honor killings occur in other Arab countries. Jordan is the only one that keeps official statistics.
These murders will continue as long as there are Arab men who believe that they own women and that their honor resides between these women's thighs. These murders will continue as long as there are women who agree with these men.

I just want you also to know that young men are also victims of these crimes that are committed in the name of honor. How many parents killed their daughters along with their boyfriends...

I have dawn played this in the past but there is no place for it.
Times have changed and in this case, I say when the murdered be asked for what reason were she murdered, let the father answer what have she done that is so grave that she deserved to be killed it’s not honor killing here it’s bigotry and bigheadedness, and it’s just like Yemen same living stretcher and regimes that will dwell on this just to keep them at bay. So to hell with them literary.

Yes, you're right. Which makes "honor killings" the perfect patriarchal crime--against women and young men. Young men are also victimized to a lesser extent with the pressure put on them to carry out these crimes to cleanse their honor.

Jordan is the only country that keeps statistics and I have them somewhere so I'll post them at some point. Other Arab countries don't bother count such murders.
Sorry Amal to disappoint you, but there is no way to get rid of them, because stupid people multiply faster that smart people!

What is wrong with you people, people are talking in a no hope tone and it is like nothing we can do about it.
As wrong as it is, 12 a year is not bad number. people die from accident more frequent, and besides, in these 12 honor killings, were they all mistaken for adultery?
i am against honor killing, but i am against adultery too. ArabLady and the others wanna kill everyman on earth, wow, that is just amazing to see how women think. i hope you don't represent the majority.
and it was funny the one said the stupid people mutlply faster, hmm that should justfy why men are always there? it may be a surprise to you, but it takes a woman to multply men. so unless women is as stupid as men, then maybe.
12 killing a year, that is nothing, of course there is a chance that there is more, but only 12 is recorded and considering that there is still pretty illetrate areas of jordan, then 12 killings a year is a reasonable number.
and if that statistic is true, wait several years and it will almost vanishes, since in the other site it shows the youth are more literate than old people in jordan.
i hope honor killing reduces, but i hope adultery reduces too, becaue it is rising in jordan, and it is both sexes fault
if you want to better understand so-called honour killings, there is a new book out called Reclaiming Honor in Jordan which can be purchased on amazon.com. the author traveled all around jordan surveying people, asking what they believe, why they believe it, how strongly they believe it, and a bunch of other questions. i'd never seen these many figures on these killings before.
