Ode to Fool

I just had fool mdammas for dinner at a new Arabic restaurant in Silver Spring called A Taste of Jerusalem. This was really good Palestinian fool, the best I've ever had in the States. I had it with fresh pita bread and mint tea! Funny how here it is served as an appetizer! As if you can eat anything for the next three days!

Fool, for those who are wondering what I'm talking about, is made up of fava beans and the usual yummy suspects (lemon, olive oil, garlic, cilantro). It is hummus's childhood friend and best buddy. But unlike its well-known and uppity friend, which has been appropriated, anglicized, and watered down to a "health food" and even called a "dip" (how humiliating!) fool is very down to earth and has not been globalized--thank the lord of beans.

Fool, they say, has a not so flattering effect on the brain--we were discouraged from eating it before exams--in case you are wondering why suddenly I'm blogging about food!

You are too spoiled! Don't know how to make Fool at home!!?
Maybe I should send you some of "Fool Seedo El 3ajeeb" which I learned the secret of making straight from my father (aka Seedo)
Actually, Shahhaiteeni, I think I'm going to go home and have fool and hummos for dinner, instead of the Fasoolyeh baida that I made yesterday.

Amal,

I think your post has made a number of people hungry for fool.

I woke up read your post and found myself an hour later in the local restaurant eating great fool mdamas. There go my plans for a productive day. Thanks a lost Amal...

At least you had your fool when you were meant to have it: in the morning. This way you don't have to worry about meals for the rest of the day. Isn't it why it's poor people's food?

But really, why do you think it hasn't achieved the celebrity status of hummos?

"why do you think it hasn't achieved the celebrity status of hummos?"

"akalnu khumus ve asinu khayim", I suppose that's why.

Fool is kind of heavy for western taste. For example kids don't like it as much as Humos.

No idea what the above means, but I'll take your word for it.

It is in Hebrew : We ate Hummos and had a great time.

Hummos is a delicacy in Israel, which has adopted it as a national dish.

Of course. Along with falafel--I have this postcard of a falafel sandwich and an Israeli flag in it.

Another reason to root for fool. Next time I will write a fool mu3allaka.

I guess they are eating too much hummos in Israel--severe sesame allergy is a growing problem there just like peanut allergy in the U.S.

Appropriating the food: what about "Israeli couscous" which is maftoul, and I have a U.S. cookbook with a recipe for "Israeli salad," also known as fattoush (sp?).

I guess the trick is to put "Israeli" before any dish, and thus "nationalize" it! Brilliant.
